THE PROCESS IN STEPS

1. We start with the IDEA

Weet je al…

  • … hoe het verhaal loopt?
  • Is er al kant-en-klare tekst?
  • Wat wil je vertellen met welk doel?
  • Aan wie wil je vertellen?
  • Welke sfeer wil je overbrengen (vrolijk, blij, speels, duister, spannend of een combinatie natuurlijk)?
  • Wil je een écht prentenboek of juist meer illustraties, die de tekst aanvullen

You may already have a clear idea and can see it just in front of you, but it may also be that it still needs to be shaped.

What about the structure of the story, are there specific main characters, perhaps even with special characteristics – in short, how far are you already self in this process?

A useful tool for the entire process is my WORKBOOK, which you can request via miranda@doekiekunst.nl , with all kinds of questions, extra information and much more ;).

Based on this information, we can start to discuss it together, just to see where you stand and how we might be able to move forward together.

 

2. What kind of ILLUSTRATIONS go with this?

You have an idea for your story and how you want to express this in a book. A great basis to see what kind of illustrations fit in to this!

Denk aan:

  • paginavullende illustraties of kleinere tekeningen verspreid
  • Stijl van de illustraties – getekend (met kleurpotlood of aquarelpotloden), geschilderd (met acrylverf, aquarel of inkt etc) of combinaties hiervan
  • Kleurgebruik, natuurlijk afhankelijk van de sfeer
  • Hoeveel details je wilt laten zien en wat je leuk vindt
  • Met of zonder achtergrond, schaduwwerking

The type of illustrations is very decisive for the look of your book and I understand that such a decision is not easy. That is why a real example drawing is super important and of course it is part of it before we can really start working on the book!

For this we first discuss together, what you would like to see as an example. Do you want to go for the main character or more of a situation sketch incl background? You can just say it…

Sample drawing successful? Great! Then we will start to plan the process to the complete book. We look at each page to see what text will be on it and how the illustration will fit in with it.

  • You will always receive a sketch with the detailed idea first, so that adjustments can always be made at an early stage.
  • This is followed by a drawing in which all details and specific wishes are clearly visible and if this is correct…
  • the complete colored illustration will follow, which can be placed directly in the book.

But text and illustrations together do not make a book you can hold yet… What happens next?

 

3. What is involved in the LAYOUT?

The text & drawings finally come together during the layout of the book! Here a lot of choices will have to be made, because now it is about the actual combining of everything together on the page.

 

Aan welke keuzes moet je denken?

Indeling pagina

  • Plaatsing van de tekst & de illustraties op de pagina

Tekst

  • Lettertypes (Vrolijk – handgeschreven – Sjiek – Met nadruk)
  • Kleur van de letters, wel/geen schaduw
  • Grootte van de letters, wisselingen in de zinnen

Omslag boek & schutbladen

  • Ontwerp van de omslag en de schutbladen
  • ISBN # voor registratie/mogelijke verkoop
  • Titel
  • Tekst op de achterkant, colofon, dankwoord etc

 Maar ook:

  • soort papier (dik, dun of speciaal; wel/niet gerecycled)
  • Wel/geen FSC-keurmerk
  • Hardcover of toch liever softcover of wire-O

Fortunately, none of this has to be determined right from the start and it will simply become clear during the process what the preference is and what fits best in the complete picture.

We always look at all the possibilities together and ensure that your idea is best expressed in the final book.

What are the costs?

The INVESTMENT for this complete trajectory is: € 3,450 excluding 21% VAT ( € 4,174.50 including VAT )

The investment applies from the moment that the sample drawing is approved and we really continue the process together to come to a book you can hold ;).

Quite an investment, so… what exactly do you get for this amount?

  • 24 pages of interior with your text & DoekieKunst illustrations (full page or all separate drawings with the text)
  • Design cover with your text & DoekieKunst illustrations
  • Design endpapers with your text (colophon/acknowledgements etc.) & DoekieKunst illustrations
  • ISBN number for official registration
  • The complete layout by DoekieKunst into a print-ready PDF
  • 2 Hardcover printed copies of the ready-made book

  • 1 on 1 guidance throughout the entire process regarding options & choices
  • Tips & tricks to achieve a complete interpretation of your text & story
